I2Phex is a specialized, open-source file-sharing program designed specifically to run inside the Invisible Internet Project (I2P) dark web network. It is a modified version (or “fork”) of an old Gnutella file-sharing client called Phex.

To understand I2Phex, you have to look at the unique way it blends traditional file-sharing with dark web privacy.
The Gnutella Network Base: Traditional file sharing often uses peer-to-peer (P2P) systems where users connect directly to each other to download parts of a file. I2Phex takes this system but strips away the regular internet connection.
Garlic Routing: Instead of sending a file straight from Person A to Person B, I2Phex routes the data through the I2P network. It uses garlic routing, which bundles multiple encrypted messages together and bounces them through a global network of volunteer computers.
No IP Addresses: Within the network, regular IP addresses are completely hidden. They are replaced by long, garbled cryptographic keys. This makes it virtually impossible for an outsider—or even the person you are sharing with—to see your actual location or identity.

Censorship Resistance: There is no central server for a government or company to shut down. The network is entirely decentralized.
